Rice Harvest
Explore the Riverina and discover how one of Australia’s most productive agricultural regions combines innovation, sustainability and world-class food and fibre production.
The Riverina is internationally recognised for its fertile soils, reliable irrigation systems and progressive farming practices.  The region plays a critical role in feeding Australians while exporting premium agricultural products to markets throughout Asia, the Middle East, Europe and North America.

Irrigation and Water Efficiency

Coleambally Irrigation manages one of the most efficient irrigation systems in the world.  Carefully designed channels, recycling systems and advanced water management technologies allow farmers to maximize production while minimizing water use and environmental impact.

Modern irrigation practices across the Riverina help produce high-quality crops while supporting sustainable land management and biodiversity outcomes.

Rice Production

The Riverina is the centre of Australia’s rice industry.  Australian rice is grown, milled and packed locally by SunRice, creating a fully integrated paddock-to-plate supply chain.

SunRice exports Australian rice products to more than 50 countries and is recognized globally for premium quality, food safety and sustainable production methods.  Riverina rice growers are regarded among the most water-efficient rice producers in the world.

Citrus Industry

The Riverina is Australia’s largest citrus-growing region, producing oranges, mandarins, lemons and grapefruit for both domestic and export markets.

Large orchards and advanced packing facilities support year-round production, while exports continue to grow into Asian and International markets where Australian citrus is highly valued for its quality and freshness.

Wine Industry

Wine grapes are one of the Riverina’s largest horticultural industries, with approximately 25% of Australian wine produced in the region.

The warm climate, reliable irrigation and experienced growers enable consistent production of quality wine grapes used in both premium and commercial wines exported around the world.

Aquaculture

Aquaculture is becoming increasingly important to the regional economy.  Aquna Sustainable Murray Cod is recognized as the world’s largest producer of sustainably farmed Murray Cod.

Using advanced recirculating aquaculture systems, the company focuses on environmentally sustainability, water efficiency and premium-quality seafood production.

Almonds and Nuts

Almond production has expanded rapidly across the Riverina, becoming a major export industry.

Large-scale orchards utilize advanced irrigation and harvesting systems to product premium almonds supplied to both Australian and International markets. Demand for healthy food products continues to drive growth in the sector.

Prunes and Dried Fruit

The Riverina is Australia’s leading producer of prunes and dried fruit products.  Ideal growing conditions and specialized processing facilities allow the region to supply high-quality fruit products nationally and internationally.

Olive Oil Industry

Olive groves are becoming increasingly common throughout the Riverina, with the region developing a reputation for premium Australian olive oil production.

Modern processing facilities and favorable growing conditions support the expansion of this emerging industry.

Cotton Production

Cotton is now a major crop in the Riverina, contributing significantly to regional employment and exports.

The industry is supported by five cotton gins that process locally grown cotton for domestic textile manufacturing and export markets.  Advances in irrigation efficiency, plant genetics and farming technology have helped Riverina cotton growers improve both sustainability and productivity.

A Region Feeding the World

Farm, rice, citrus and wine to aquaculture, almonds and cotton, the Riverina showcases the scale, diversity and innovation of modern Australian agriculture.
